Confessions of an Expat

1. Fosters is NOT Australian for beer. I have yet to see a single can/tap handle/bottle/ad.

2. Aussies are very kind, warm, and welcoming people. What they do lack, however, is line etiquette. I have been cut in front of three times in two days. But I must admit, it was done with a smile.

3. I have started to pretend I am Canadian. I know my momma taught me to always tell the truth, so if you must, Mom, please skip to #4 right now. The warmth and kindness of Melburnians turns a bit chilly once I answer their question about where I am from. So this weekend when the salesman at Virgin Mobile guessed my accent was Canadian, I decided I would go with it. I never flat out said I was Canadian, I just kept oohing and ahhing at the international call rates to Canada. He remained friendly throughout our visit, and so I realized that I had found the key to everlasting harmony while abroad - deceit!

4. I thought the U.S. was the safest place to live, but I am beginning to think I was wrong. Safety is taken to a whole new level here. First of all, Whit had to wear a seatbelt on the regional flight, even though he was an "infant in arms." They give you a smaller seatbelt to attach to your seatbelt! And they do not care one iota that you are holding a child who has zero interest in sitting in your lap. Also, the apartment buildings have very strict codes. Our apartment alone has two speakers through which they can give us emergency info. In the States, if you sleep through a fire in the apartment down the hall, your loss...literally. Here, all twenty-two floors of inhabitants receive a VERY loud message of danger, with detailed instructions about how to vacate safely. How do I know? They test it once a month, usually during Whit's nap time.

G'Day Mates

We have arrived! The 24-hour journey went surprisingly well. As you can see, Whit and Andy were thrilled to finally make it to Sydney. It was so hot that we had to strip Whit down to his skivvies, and he proudly pranced around showing off his stems.

This past weekend we explored the Melbourne Aquarium, which has an AWESOME penguin exhibit. Whit was able to get up-close and personal with his wobbly brethren.

Hoping for a spot in the Madden's global ad campaign, Whit posed with the Melbourne skyline in the background. He is sending lots of love to everyone back in the States.

Farewell For Now

As we gather our belongings for the move across the deep blue sea, Whit and his friend Ev scheduled one more delightful day together.

Not sure when the next post will pop up, but perhaps it will have a kangaroo with Whit in it's pouch. Until then, Whit sends his love!

A year of so many firsts began with one little boy...

The list of firsts is truly endless when you have your first child. Every day seems like it is filled with firsts for us and Whit. Some of our most memorable ones from the past year:

~My first time experiencing labor and all the fun stuff afterwards that no one ever discusses
~Andy's first time holding Whit in the hospital
~Whit's first car ride home, and driving like we had 50 dozen un-cartoned eggs in the back
~Whit's first smile and laugh
~The first time Whit recognized our voices
~Whit's first cold, and how it seemed rather pathetic that he didn't seem to mind being sick near as much as his parents do
~Whit's first airplane ride and tourist experience in our nation's capital
~The first time work has interfered with my personal life, and having to sort through what that means to me (still sorting...)
~Whit's first meal of solids, and subsequent first nights of blissful full-night sleeping
~Whit's first tooth that suddenly appeared and ended up being nothing like the painful eruption of the seven since then
~Whit's first funky dance moves
~Whit's first time "swimming" (splashing, really) at Mullett Lake
~The first time Whit cried when we left the room
~The first time Whit went from looking like an escaped con shimmying under a fence to crawling on all fours
~Whit's first Halloween costume, Thanksgiving feast, and Christmas morning presents
~The first time we knew what it felt like to be parents, and how thankful we are for everything that Bob & Esther and Rich & Kathy did for us growing up

Enough reminiscing mom, let's eat some cake!
